So as promised, I wanted to follow up the first post I wrote to create awareness around heart health… As I mentioned in it, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. The thing is that as women, we have focused so much on cancer & obesity that we often neglect to realize how deadly heart attacks and strokes are for us, no matter if you are Latina, a woman of color or not.
Thanks to Omron, I’ll be sharing my favorite holistic tips to prevent heart attacks & strokes… which go very hand in hand with their “Going For Zero” pledge, a beautiful 90 days campaign aimed to create awareness so there are zero heart attacks and strokes… Would LOVE if join me!
Holistic Tips To Prevent Heart Attacks & Strokes
Ginger is by far one of my favorite roots along with turmeric (you guys know I’m obsessed!) and with good reason because it is AMAZING to support heart health. It has been recorded that ginger may decrease blood pressure by preventing blood clots from forming in your arteries and blood vessels. Blood clots can restrict or prevent blood from flowing through your circulatory system, which can lead to hypertension. By preventing blood clots, ginger may also help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
2. Good Fats
Did you say avocados????
Studies have also shown that people who ate an avocado every day for a week reduced their LDL (‘bad cholesterol’) and triglyceride levels, which are associated with heart disease. These same studies showed that at the same time, HDL (‘good cholesterol’) levels increased… talk about a great mix of yums and health!
3. Monitor Your Health
Through my experience as a holistic nutrition & wellness coach, I’ve learned the importance of being vigilant about our health. High blood pressure (hypertension) can easily go undetected—especially if you’re young and appear healthy. One way to help reduce your risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease is to have your blood pressure checked regularly, keeping the results for your own records. This should be a lifelong practice and it is never too early to start.
I have started collecting my own data with my Omron EVOLV and let me tell ya’… it’s been EYE OPENING!!! I plan to address my findings in more detail in my 3rd post because I’m still in awe of how much we overestimate how “healthy” our heart is.
So I want you to do the same… get yourself an Omron EVOLV, join me in the pledge and start tracking your numbers… it can very well save your life! Use the data you gather as a baseline, your compass that guides you in making important health and wellness decisions in the future. Knowing your health status now can help you identify the changes (even small ones) you need to make to reduce the risk of facing a stroke and heart disease in the future.
4. Manage Inflammation
You know I talk about inflammation all the time, and it is an area I have specialized because I know HOW IMPORTANT it is for our health. Chronic inflammation in the body increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. The majority of illnesses grow in an inflamed body, but they can’t thrive if you focus on keeping your body alkaline and balanced.
You can manage inflammation by eating wholesome, nutritious foods. Avoiding processed foods, dairy, wheat, and sugar are also good strategies. I also always recommend to my coaching clients to avoid toxins such as pesticides and GMO foods by selecting organic products, drinking purified water and getting adequate sleep.
5. Stay Hydrated
I mean… Do I need to elaborate on this?
Lately, I’ve been gulping water and cold-pressed green juices nonstop! Not only does it help to keep my skin’s elasticity (bye bye premature aging!), but it is super important for overall health especially if you have an increased risk of forming blood clots. I make sure I drink half of my body weight in ounces of water/green juice a day. I always increase my intake when I am exercising, or traveling on long flights!
Watermelons are PACKED with lycopene. Lycopene, which gives them it’s red color is an antioxidant that has been associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. One more excuse to eat this refreshing fruit now that spring is here, and the summer is fast approaching!
I have told you before how yoga changed my life!
This amazing practice is suitable for both the young and old, and studies suggest that yoga can help to lower blood pressure. Along with yoga, eating a diet rich in brightly colored fruits and vegetables, exercising, maintaining proper body weight and avoiding smoking — are the foundation of blood pressure control. Make it a point to practice daily, and in no time you’ll see how it becomes part of your life and you even miss it went you can’t get down on your mat!
