6 Female POWERHOUSES share how they kicked-off the new year + wellness practices they are committing to on 2020!

Get inspired with the insights from these 6 female powerhouses on how they kicked the new year, and the wellness practices they are committing to follow!

I’m sooooo happy it’s already 2020! Like over-the-top happy…

2019 tried me in so many ways. I shared some of it with you on my newsletter and will do so here, for my blog reader as well. Soon!

For the past few months, I had these very specific things I wanted to do to kick-off 2020, to set my intentions, and how I wanted to name my year.

And because inspiration is all around us, I also wanted to include the insights of some AMAZING ladies who I personally love and admire in different ways, shapes, and forms. Be it personally, professionally (or both), these women are the true definition of POWERHOUSE.

For me, it’s so important that you (my reader) can see yourself reflected in the women I feature in here. I couldn’t be happier to start the year with such a high-vibe group of ladies!

So let’s start with my own answers…

1. Candy Calderon (that’s me!)

Do you follow any particular ritual or practice to kick-off the new year? (it doesn’t have to be something you do prior to new years, it can be something you do in the first days of the new years as well!).

I’m a firm believer in clearing the energy, letting go of what no longer serves me, and making room for new things. So at the beginning of the year, I always do a clearing ritual with palo santo. I also set aside a day to review my year, what worked, what didn’t, and how I will pivot if needed.

In previous years, I used to be very go-with-the-flow, but the more I grow as a woman (and businesswoman), the more I understood that I needed to be more intentional with how I approached my year. Although not everything is under my control, it feels so great to take action on those things I DO have control… and that starts with mapping out how I want my year to go, and what I need to do to get there.

What self-care or wellness practice are you planning to be more intentional/keep doing in 2020?

As a holistic health & wellness coach, this is a HUGE thing for me, and it is one of the main things I teach my health coaching clients. There’s no way I can take-up my year and have the results I want if my vehicle of life is not in top condition.

2019 was huge for me in terms of meditation. My attention span is very short, and I have a monkey mind so learning to be still, to let go and empty my mind has been huge for me and helped me to show up as my best-focused self.  So I plan to keep doing that! And of course, I always keep following my own advises, and favoring an anti-inflammatory diet, keeping my body as alkaline as possible, exercising… all that good stuff.

If you could choose a word to name your 2020, what would it be?

I chose: MANIFESTING (focusing on the power of positive manifesting, high-vibration, and mindset. How everything that materializes in my life is a construct, a manifestation, of my thinking).

2. Vanessa Coppes

Vanessa is the Editor-In-Chief of Bella Magazine, a dear friend and a mentor since the day we met years, and years ago! She’s also an author having penned 2 books: “5 Steps to Fabulous: Choices for Living Beautifully, Inside and Out!” and “Social Media Strategies for Small Businesses: A Guide for Solo-Entrepreneurs!” + the co-founder of ETTWomen and the ETTWomen Foundation.

Do you follow any particular ritual or practice to kick-off the new year? (it doesn’t have to be something you do prior to new years, it can be something you do in the first days of the new years as well!).

I always make a vision board with my kids on New Year’s Day. We do it as a family activity and my youngest, as he’s gotten older, is very into it.

What self-care or wellness practice are you planning to be more intentional/keep doing in 2020?

More alone time. I crave moments of solitude to balance my “always-on” life. I’m constantly bombarded by meetings, calls, emails and then family. Alone time doing absolutely nothing, brings me back to center.

If you could choose a word to name your 2020, what would it be?

It’s already chosen: my word is breakthrough. I intend on settling for nothing less than fabulous in every aspect of my life.

3. Yai Vargas

Yai is the founder of The Latinista, a national network of women and Latina professionals invested in professional development and career mobility. Whenever I’m looking for some inspiration on my business, and as a young Latina following her dreams Yai always either pops on my feed (like magic!) or she comes to mind very often. She’s such a source of inspiration to me… It’s a pleasure to share her insights with you here.

Do you follow any particular ritual or practice to kick-off the new year? (it doesn’t have to be something you do prior to new years, it can be something you do in the first days of the new years as well!).

I usually do 3 things to prep for the new year:

1 – I have a half-day strategy session with my team (accountant and fellow entrepreneurs that support me throughout the year) to discuss goals, resources, and timelines.

2 – I empty my email of all requests and make sure I am at inbox zero – this helps me start the year off with a fresh inbox and I can tackle all incoming requests immediately.

3 – I archive all my previous year’s Trello activity and create new folders for this incoming year. Trello is the one tool that has kept me on top of every single conversation, project, and proposal I have sent this year.

What self-care or wellness practice are you planning to be more intentional/keep doing in 2020?

I have recently started to be more intentional in removing added sugars from my meals – Not completely, but I’ve been more keto which has had a positive effect on my energy and health. I also intend to work out more from my living room – there are SO many free workout videos online that only take 10-25 mins, I have no excuse to take a break and do more of this in 2020!

If you could choose a word to name your 2020, what would it be?

As I get ready for 2020, my word for the new year is “ALIGN.” Since taking a leap of faith into entrepreneurship, I’ve been able to align with the brands and groups that not only reflect my values but also light up my soul – I am looking forward to continuing that strategic magic!

4. Kate Marlys

Kate is the founder of Philly PR Girl. The go-to marketing agency for high profile events, brands, and businesses in my dear city of Philadelphia. I met Kate years ago in Philly, at a conference where she was a speaker. I’ve read her blog ever since I moved to Philly to stay in the know about everything going on in the city.

In a very millennial-fashion, social media keep us up-to-date with each other and through several of the conferences both of us are invited to be speakers (never lucky enough to be on the same day tho! lol). I just LOVE her drive, passion, and the energy she exudes. So excited to share her take!

Do you follow any particular ritual or practice to kick-off the new year? (it doesn’t have to be something you do prior to new years, it can be something you do in the first days of the new years as well!).

Well, my birthday is in January and I always try to get out of town and relax. This year is a big birthday for me so I will be taking two trips in January! [Happy b-day Kate!]

What self-care or wellness practice are you planning to be more intentional/keep doing in 2020?

With owning two businesses, Philly PR Girl and Photo Pop Philly, the last couple of months I was not able to go to the gym as much as I would like. I really do believe the gym is a great stress reliever, so in 2020 I will be making more of an effort to get there.

My trick for busy entrepreneurs is to work out in the morning. Trust me, it’s hard. I know! Things always come up during the workday, so if you work out in the morning there will be not as many distractions.

If you could choose a word to name your 2020, what would it be?

Level Up!
(I know, I know… it’s two words. And I love the Ciara song too!).

5. Tracy Timberlake

Tracy (or, Dr. Tracy to you, and the rest of the world!) is an Award-Winning Business Coach & Digital  Strategist. Her business serves millions of peoples in over 100 countries. I met Tracy after being invited to be a speaker to Flourish Conference, a conference she co-founded focused on female founders and entrepreneurs. She’s now not only a dear friend but also my go-to strategist, helping sky-rocket my brand and business.

Do you follow any particular ritual or practice to kick-off the new year? (it doesn’t have to be something you do prior to new years, it can be something you do in the first days of the new years as well!).

I’m a firm believer in the fact that I can set new intentions, standards, and practices at any time of the year… And I do!

But I understand that the new year carries with it new energy. So, one of the things I like to do is do a year in review. And just take a look at what has happened in the last year. Then, I sort of take inventory. I ask myself – what did I love about the past year that I want to take with me into the new one, and what things do I choose to leave behind. I find that setting that sort of intention really helps me stay focused on what I am wanting in the future months.

What self-care or wellness practice are you planning to be more intentional/keep doing in 2020?

Yes!!! Love this question. One of the things I plan to do is to reduce my travel schedule significantly! I find that it’s just exhausting for me to be out and about as much as I have been. So, in the new year, I plan to stay home as much as possible lol.

If you could choose a word to name your 2020, what would it be?

Increase!
That’s my word for 2020. I love number crunching – so I am looking at all kinds of increase in life and business. I predict it’s going to be a year of increase all around!

5. Marissa Armas

I met Marissa when she interviewed me for NBC Latino, years ago. We clicked instantly and became fast friends. Through career growth, relocations, and more, we’ve remained fierce cheerleaders of each other. Marissa is now in New Mexico, covering the Southern Border & Immigration topics.

Marissa is such an inspiration for me as well. She is a fierce woman following her dreams, and I’m thrilled to share her insights as well!

Do you follow any particular ritual or practice to kick-off the new year? (it doesn’t have to be something you do prior to new years, it can be something you do in the first days of the new years as well!).

I don’t have many New Years’ rituals or practices, but every year I do try harder to be more consistent with journaling. Also in the new year, I make a list of all my goals and accomplishments for the year, and really just jot down what in my personal and career life I’d like to see come to fruition.

What self-care or wellness practice are you planning to be more intentional/keep doing in 2020?

The self-care and wellness practices I’m trying to be better at in 2020 are:

1. Drinking more water

2. Eating better… maybe transitioning to a plant-based diet

3. Incorporating more spices and foods that help keep the immune system healthy. I also want to hike more and really just take more time to sit back and do nothing once in a while. I also want to learn more healthy food recipes.

If you could choose a word to name your 2020, what would it be?

The word I would choose to name my 2020 is FOCUS.
