I’ve always been a night owl. Ever since I can remember, my creative juices just flow after late night-time.
My sister has always given me a hard time with it: “estas loca!” she would tell me, ’cause when we still lived together, she would wake up to go to the bathroom and see me at 3 am on the computer. “It’s not healthy for you” she said; urgggg so annoying! but she was –as usual– right.
As I grew older, I started to have more responsibilities and got married. PLUS, for the past 2 years, my business and career as a health & wellness influencer pretty much exploded and has kept growing exponentially. As you can imagine, I have a CRAZY work schedule. Which is a good thing, but if I don’t manage myself correctly, I will be burned out AF by the end of the year… nope, thanks.
I’m trying you guys, I’m really trying…. and I need to walk my talk, and take care of myself!
My goal is to go to bed at 9 p.m. tops (am I crazy or what?!).
If you follow me on Instagram or know me personally, then you know this is a HARD one for me. Who the hell can run a business, be married and try to conquer the world and STILL go to bed at 9? I’m literally crying here.
But, then I started reading Arianna Huffington’s latest book “Sleep Revolution” and doing TONS of research on the nasty effects of disrupted sleeping patterns and not resting enough. This has profound consequences – on our health, our job performance, our relationships, our happiness and pretty much everything in our life.
I learned that not sleeping enough also mess with my hormones because, during sleep, our bodies secrete hormones that help to control appetite, energy metabolism, and glucose processing. Too little sleep upsets the balance of these and other hormones which may result in food cravings even after we have eaten an adequate number of calories. We may also be more likely to eat foods such as sweets that satisfy the craving for a quick energy boost.
So, fixing my sleep has become my obsession and a goal of mine for this quarter. Here are the 5 things I’m doing which so far are helping a lot:
1 – Trying… TRYING to get in bed by 9 p.m. no cell phones, computer or kindle. I love to read before sleeping, so ONLY regular books, no electronics in bed.
2 – By 8:30ish p.m. I start drinking a relaxing tea (yup, that early because if I wait for later to drink too much liquid, I’ll be waking up the whole night to pee… not that you needed to know. But, oh well!) and drink either Magnesium tablets or my LIFE SAVING supplement CALM. Again, if you follow me on Snapchat you’ll know about it. I use it all the time, not only to sleep, but it’s also amazing to relax the muscles after a kickass weightlifting session at the gym. At night time, I put a 1/2 tbsp on my tea (READ HERE for more on my favorite supplements).
3 – I also find very helpful to do guided meditations in bed. I have a huge case of “monkey mind”, which means that my mind is all over the place and have too many tabs open at the same time –hence why I have so much trouble falling asleep-, there are so many good meditations Apps out there. Right now I’m very into Deepak Chopra’s app, it’s not free though. I promise I’ll do a research and write about FREE meditation apps soon.
4 – Essential oils: A good Lavender oil is always my choice when I need to relax. I rub it on my hands and do deep inhalations as follows: Place my palms over my nose and breath in counting 3, hold my breath counting 3 and exhale counting 5. Repeat that 3 times… I find this practice so soothing and it really helps me unwind. I also put a few drops on my candles around the house and of course my oil diffuser which I always have on my night table, next to my bed.
5 – Lastly, I’ve found that using a good silk sleep mask is helping a lot because I’m super sensitive to light… I’ve tried so many and they all bothered me, touched my eyelids –urrrrg-, gave me headaches, or straight up robbed my skin from moisture. But, I knew there would be one out there to fit my expectations and I fund it, yeiiii! One day at 2 a.m. (yeah I know, sue me!), desperate surfing the web, I found my answer with the AMAZING masks from La’ Aquarelle which are eco sleep masks, hand dyed using different plants instead of nasty colorants, and 100% chemical and toxic free. Mine is the Avocado Mask, which is made of organic bamboo silk –perfect for people with sensitive skin because it’s naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial– and the fabric is hand dyed, using avocado stones as dyeing technique to create a beautiful natural peachy pink color… can you tell I’m in love?! and btw, La’ Aquarelle is NOT sponsoring me. I just truly love their products and love that they are a small shop doing an awesome product, worthy of support.
Now is your turn… What do YOU do to relax and sleep better?
I’m dying to know. I can’t be the only one struggling with this.
Tell me if you have done anything that’s helping you, ANYTHING! I’m taking ideas, surely I need more help Lol
Hope my tips help you as well!
