I began to write this from 35,000 feet in the air… Destination: Denver. It’s my first time visiting this city.

Excited? Hell yes!

On my way to meet with the amazing team from American Heart Association who I am thrilled to support through my role as wellness influencer for the Go Red Get Fit campaign 2018-2019. We will be shutting it down with the girls from the Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority in their annual convention, where we will share healthy living inspo, how they (as women) can take care of their heart health, enjoy the process + we will also workout together. Yesss!!!

What´s Go Red Get Fit?

Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed it as an older man’s disease. To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease & stroke as the number one killer of women, the American Heart Association created Go Red For Women, a passionate, emotional, social initiative designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Why Only Women?

In the past, heart disease and heart attack have been predominantly associated with men, its something that I see a LOT in my role as holistic health & wellness coach. Most of the research out there focuses on THEIR perspective and most of the guidelines have been created based on that data which has worked to the detriment of women… Not fair, I know!

That´s where Go Red Get Fit comes in,  to create awareness around the fact that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women and educate us so we can make better choices. The Go Red For Women movement works to make sure women know they are at risk so they can take action to protect their health.

What About Latinas?

One of the things that motivated me the most to be part of this beautiful movement, is the common belief among the women in my culture that heart disease is “a man’s thing”. It’s so culturally ingrained in our brains that we are the caregivers, the nourishers, that we almost always take care of everybody in our family before we start thinking about our own health.

Many Hispanic women have said that they´re more likely to take preventative action for their families when it comes to heart health. However, they end up completely ignoring their own health in the process, and these acts of selflessness can become deadly… Una locura, verdad???!!!

Here are some stats:

  • On average, Hispanic women are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than non-Hispanics.
  • Only 1 in 3 Hispanic women are aware that heart disease is their No. 1 killer.
  • Many are unaware that 80 percent of all cardiac events, such as heart attacks, can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.
