I’ve talked so much about the benefits of detoxing our bodies, but feel like I haven’t touched on the subject of sustainable fashion and the benefits behind it. That’s why I’m so happy to bring this post to life in collaboration with the AMAZING people of prAna, a sustainable fashion brand that I’ve been obsessing about for the longest time.
One of the things I teach my coaching clients all the time —and everyone who’s listening!— is that a balanced & healthy lifestyle cannot be only based on what we eat… this is a 360 you guys, so there’s no point in eating super clean, but neglecting all other areas of our lives that can affect our health. That’s why I always champion a clean lifestyle through and through, fashion included.
Now, don’t get me wrong… I still love a bargain like any of us would, but little by little we can take baby steps for a more eco-friendly, organic and sustainable life.
I think it’s time to detox our closet… shall we?!
What do I mean by “Detox Our Closet”?
There are so many chemicals lurking in the fabric of the clothes we use… and think about it, our skin is the biggest organ we have and day after day we expose it to different fabrics, detergents, skin products, etc. Little do we think about all the crap we are absorbing and how it can affect our health.
Here are some of the chemicals we can find on ‘non-sustainable’ or ‘eco-friendly’ clothes:
- Formaldehyde, yuck… which is a skin irritant and also a known carcinogen, used to create garments that carry that “always slick” look.
- Other chemicals I hate are highly fluorinated compounds used to make waterproof finishes, like the ones you would see on bomber jackets or rain jackets.
- And can we please not forget about Phthalates?, In case you didn’t know, they are hormone disruptors, and used as plasticizers or softening agents in fake leather that is often used to make things like purses, wallets, shoes, belts, pants and dresses.
- There’s also Nonylphenols, another variety of hormone disruptors applied in compounds that are used to make dyes stick to the fibers.
So, sustainable & eco-friendly fashion is more than a trend… I think is something we all should look into and be more mindful of the choices we make.
We can choose to make our money and our voice heard, and support brands who are doing the right thing. We can choose to seek information that helps us to make better, informed choices.
Yes, I still buy regular clothes, but I believe everything is about balance and after so many years, now I know better!
You will see me talking about this A LOT MORE…. I believe that ethical fashion is the future of fashion. Is important to me who made my clothes. I care that my clothes are an extension of my lifestyle, and really, the question isn’t why should I care….
The question is, how could I not care?
+ I’m wearing (and obsessing) the amazing “Liana Sweater”, made 55% of organic hemp and 45% of organic cotton.
+ + And the pants are the “Chetan Capri”, made 53% of organic hemp, 42% of organic cotton and 5% spandex… They are so, so, so comfy and soft!
