Yes, there’s a thing or two we can learn from Lebron, and apply to our own health!
I mean… how not to?
The man is determined, he is focused and quite honestly a force to be reckoned with.
Now bear with me, this is NOT another post about Lebron and the Cavs making it to the finals, and it certainly doesn’t matter if you are team Warriors or Cavs. This is about how for a decade now, they guy has been accomplishing things that seemed daunting and quite frankly highly unlikely –depending on the source you’re getting your info from– and how WE can apply some of that to our own life for thriving health.
Here are the 7 lessons I’ve learned from Lebron that can easily apply to our health!
1. Your lifestyle NEEDS to support your health goals
He could eat from the fanciest restaurants, drink every day but he chooses not to. When he has a goal, he tailors his diet and physical activities in order to support that goal. Do YOU set for yourself an eating and exercise plan that will support your health goals? Maybe it’s time to revisit those.
2. Preparation is KEY
Do you think he leaves what he will eat to fate and wait to be hungry to see what’s in the fridge? Nawwww! He prepares, he plans and even though I’m super sure he has all the help in the world and people looking out for him so he gets all the nutrition he needs, it comes down to HIS determination to follow through with his diet plans. James told Business Insider “Before competition for me would be like a chicken breast and maybe a little pasta. The carbs help because you’re going out and playing a lot of minutes. But a salad and some veggies will have me perfectly fine. And before the game, I might have a protein shake and some fruit, and I’ll be ready to go”.
3. Wholesome Foods
It’s impossible to think Lebron would be such a high achiever in and outside the court on a cheap diet and he knows it. That’s why he has shared over and over again that whenever he is playing he doesn’t eat sugar, empty carbs or dairy. He subsists mostly on lean protein, fruits, and vegetables (although he loosens up a bit when he’s not playing). James finished the above sentence with “But as far as pies or pizza and sandwiches and french fries — I can’t. I’ll wait for that after the game. I can’t do that before the game.” See? Bingo!
4. Surround Yourself With Like Minded People
Choose your squad wisely, your health depends on it! Lebron is a focused, focused man. You rarely see him on tabloids out drinking and eating greasy foods, and his inner circle supports his lifestyle and are like minded individuals (his wife even owned a healthy juice spot in Miami!). Sure, there has to be a few that doesn’t meet the “criteria“, but he knows better and he chooses with whom he hangs out very strategically and so should we!
5. Physical Activity
Let’s face it, the guy is a beast and hard to parallel… Now, what we can all learn from him is that physical activity -exercise- is part of a winner DNA. It’s not just an option. He plan his workouts to support his goals (ahem… winning a championship!) his workouts are designed to boost his explosive energy out on the court as well as his power, he spends a lot of time engaged in cardio routines, which is understandable seeing as most basketball matches are intensely long affairs that require an incredible amount of stamina and fitness.
He works out about 5 days a week in the off-season and 7 days per week when basketball starts back up. He told Business Insider “My workout regimen is pretty much five times a week, every day. And it varies. Sometimes I stay at home and work out. Sometimes I’ll go to an actual class. I’ve been to, like, VersaClimber classes, or spinning classes. I do pilates as well. So, it kind of varies depending on how I’m feeling. My workout regimen is pretty consistent”.

Man, this is so self-explanatory that I won’t even go into much detail here… Lebron knows a thing or two about consistency and is probably the hardest working kid in the NBA. In order for us to reach our highest health, we need to be consistent with the way we eat and lead our lives. We cannot expect to drink a green smoothie and meditate once a week for 3 minutes and have that JLo glow, lose 10 pounds or prevent illnesses… it just doesn’t-work-that-way. Consistency, consistency, consistency!
7. He has his rituals
Have you seen him tossing the powder in the air before every game? It’s become his trademark. Just before tipoff, he leans over the courtside scorers’ table, pours a pile of powder on his hands and then, poof! throws it skyward as if filling the arena with a cloud of magic dust. It’s annoying for many, but it works for HIM!
One of my health rituals is warm water with lemon on an empty stomach every morning or my turmeric detox elixir. It helps detoxify my organism, keeps me alkaline and when I start my day that way, I know I have already accomplished something… It’s my little ritual, it’s mine and it works for ME!
